It's an All-Day Celebration

Babies born on January 1 seem to be the ones lavished with prizes, but I guess my mom couldn't wait. Despite missing out on a month's supply of free diapers, my parents were pretty excited to have an instant family during their first year of marriage. For most of my life, I've been jokingly referred to as my dad's favorite tax deduction. I've grown to love my birthday over the years, especially since several friends and three family members also share the day with me. December 31 is a time for new resolutions and fresh beginnings.

Even if December 31 is not your birthday, I hope you enjoy the day and its traditions as much as I do. Happy New Year!

Here's Why New Year's Eve is the Coolest Birthday

  • Champagne flows freely!
  • There is always a party going on somewhere
  • Everyone sings Auld Lang Syne (especially those who don't know the words)
  • It's a holiday for most of your friends and family
  • Even strangers give you flowers and birthday wishes

Auld Lang Syne

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Auld Lang Syne

"Auld Lang Syne" (: note "s" rather than "z")

Search for "lang syne" at The website of the Dictionary of the Scots language

is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294). It is well known in many English-speaking countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the new year at the stroke of midnight at the start of New Year's Day.

The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago"

or "days gone by". The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" is also used in similar poems by Robert Ayton (1570?1638), Allan Ramsay (1686?1757), and James Watson (1711) as well as older folk songs predating Burns.nls.uk

Matthew Fitt uses the phrase "In the days of auld lang syne" as the equivalent of "Once upon a time..." in his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language.

My son was born on January 2! We did celebrate it on New Year's Eve some years though. It was fun. One year when he was younger, we had a party with his friends and at 12 noon had a toast of sparkling apple cider.
